According to Apple’s Q3 filing, OS X Mountain Lion will be released to the public tomorrow, July 25. The OS improves on the current version, Lion, by adding iOS-like notifications as well as improvements like Game Center and tweaks to the Mail app.

Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote: “We’re thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter. We’ve also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release Mountain Lion tomorrow and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we’ve got in the pipeline.”

Mountain Lion upgrades will come free to Mac users who purchased a Mac on or after June 11, 2012. You can visit Apple’s website for the upgrade. Other users will pay $19.99 in the App Store.

Also of note: the upgrade may not work on some older Macs with 32-bit graphics drivers including 1,1 Mac Pros. Compatible Macs are:

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
